who • when • where • why

WHO: We are a group of people (all ages and life stages) who believe that being missionaries doesn't just mean going across the ocean to tell people about Jesus, but telling our stories right here in our own communities and blessing those around us as God continually blesses us.

WHEN: We meet the 1st Sunday of each month at 4:30pm, sharing a meal family-style and sharing our lives with each other and anyone who joins us. These times typically include worship, prayer, laughing, and tomfoolery. We do some other things on the 3rd Sundays; contact Claire for more information.

WHERE: Jon & Alissa Shirley's house in Brookside: 5703 Rockhill Rd, KCMO 64110

WHY: We believe our stories are, in fact, the good news of Jesus. We exist to draw people into the deep, beautiful, restoring love of Jesus by figuring out our stories and how to share them with the world.

On Our Own

Posted 3 days ago ago by Storytellers

Did you guys ever watch that movie? On Our Own? Or was that just me? I can still picture the cover of that VHS... kids riding into the sunset... on their own...

Anyway. Guess what?! This SUNDAY May 20th is our first meeting on our own with our respective spokes. (See what I did there with the On Our Own intro?) Rather than meeting together we will be meeting at our own locations with our own plans. Most of you should be up to date on what that plan is. If you aren't sure which spoke you want to be a part of yet and don't know the plans of each group, reply to this email and I will give you some direction.

We are continuing to abide the month of May so we hope you allow yourselves to just be with each other in a spirit of rest and play.

We'll all be back together at The Shirley's (sans shirley's, of course) on June 3rd!

See you then!

CHANGE OF PLANS

Posted 12 days ago ago by Storytellers

Hello, hello.

If you haven't realized that it's been torrentially raining for the last couple of hours then you are either an insanely hard sleeper or you live in a sound proof house. Or maybe something else. Regardless, it's been raining! Really hard! Therefore our dreams of a golden lit play-time-in-the-park experience are gone.

We will not be meeting at Loose Park tonight.

If you would still like to hang out a bit, Ryan and I are opening our home for some hang time and games. You are welcome to bring your dinner and eat here but we won't be grilling. Doors are open from 4-6 p.m. If you can, would you reply to this email so we know that you're coming? That we can gauge how many to expect.

Sorry for the change of plans! Darn weather!

Here's the address:

Evenin'.

Hope everyone is having just a lovely cinco de mayo!

Just stoppin' by to remind everyone that we're at Loose Park tomorrow evening from 4-6! Don't forget and don't forget to sign up RIGHT HERE! Bring your own meat to grill and an additional item from the list. If anyone has a charcoal grill they could bring, that would be great! Let me know if you do by replying to this email.

Also. We've got a couple of special guests joining us from UMKC. Andrew and Alvin.

I will keep you updated if it ends up raining, but for now we'll plan on being together and having the greatest time!

YIKES! SUNDAY!

Posted 15 days ago ago by Storytellers

Guys. I just wrote an entire email and then I lost it. That is crazy frustrating. I will do my best to re write it.

We've officially sent the Shirleys on their way to a relaxing and luxurious sabbatical. We're on our own now!

Our next meeting is THIS SUNDAY. May 6th. We abide in may, but that doesn't mean we don't see each other. It means we play together! And you know what they say, "The family that plays together, stays together." I don't actually know if they say that, but it rhymes so work with me here. We'll be at Loose Park in KC from 4-6. Feel free to come earlier and stay later, but those are the times we will all plan to be there. Bring your own meat as well as something on this list. Go sign up! Even if you're not gonna eat put your name on the list.

I've attached a map of the park showing where we'll be. We will keep an eye out so everyone knows where we are. Bring chairs, blankets, frisbees and anything else that's fun to play with at a park. Hopefully it doesn't rain on us!

This might seem like a great time to not join us, but it's not! It's a great time TO join us! This is just as important of a gathering as any other. Try to make it! We can't wait to see ya.

Here's my number if you get lost:

Praying for Anthony

Posted 17 days ago ago by Storytellers

Hey guys!

Isn't so great that we have all these kids running around The Gathering now? And what's better is they're kids who are learning to love Jesus and disciple! That's just pretty incredible, if you ask me.

On that note, Matt Adams sent me this request this morning via his son Jeremy:

Just wanted to invite storytellers to pray with us Jeremy's "person of peace", Anthony, and his family who has become a family of peace to the Adams family.  Anthony is having a bone transplant on Friday because he was born with a neuro-fibroma inside his bone on his right leg.  He can only walk with a walker and if surgery doesn't work the next step is amputation.  We have been praying hard and I've had the sense we need to pray for total healing leading up to Friday.  We know that God uses miraculous headings to accelerate breakthrough in new missional territories - so we are asking for that in faith and trusting His sovereignty.

Please take a moment (or two or three) and pray for Anthony and for the whole Adams family! Pray also for Matt as he heads out of the country for a couple of weeks and Meghan and the kids as they stay home without him!

We're so thankful for a spiritual family that prays! You guys are the bees knees.

From The Wootens

Posted 34 days ago ago by Storytellers

Dear Storytellers,

Woot and I want to thank you all for the lovely flowers you gave us after his father's death. Alissa went to three places and picked out an incredible bouquet for us. The beautiful fragrance and blossoms reminded us of you and gently touched our hearts. The Lord has been so good to us through all of this and you all were a part of His blessing. Thank you again.

We love you.

Tomorrow!

Posted 34 days ago ago by Storytellers

Hopefully the sun will come out tomorrow. Just like Annie said it would. That'd be ideal, I think. If not, we'll still manage to carry on.

Tomorrow SUNDAY APRIL 15 is our next Storytellers meeting. We'll be at Jon and Alissa Shirley's house eating sandwiches! Doors open at 4:30 and food is ready to eat at 4:45. Sign up RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW for something to bring.

We'll be spending some really great time praying around the Shirley family before they take off on Sabbatical. I'm so excited for these guys and I just want to be sure they're truly saturated in prayer before they leave. So make it a point to join us, won't you? After we pray for the Shirley's we'll be breaking off into our respective MCs and going on a prayer walk. Don't miss it!

Hope everyone can make it!

Sunday

Posted 37 days ago ago by Storytellers

Afternoon,

Stopping in to give you the info for THIS Sunday April 15! First of all, it's tax day so I hope you've all got your finances in order. Second of all and more to the point, we'll be at the Shirley house for our next meeting and we'll be eating sandwiches! Go HERE and sign up!

Same schedule as we've been doin'. Doors open at 4:30. Food on the table at 4:45. Then we've got a couple of VERY important things happening. This is our last meeting with Jon and Alissa before they leave for sabbatical. We would like to spend some time praying for them after dinner. During your quiet times this week please be thinking of them and listening for words or images that might bless and encourage them as they prepare for this time off. This is more than just vacation - it's a recharge and much needed time for them to spend as a family!

After we pray for the Shirley's we will be breaking off into our spokes and going on a prayer walk again in our respective areas. We'd like this time to be very focused and intentional - really discerning what God is saying in our contexts. We won't be meeting back up at the Shirley's this time afterwards.

This begins a new era for the Storytellers! From this point on we will only be meeting together once a month! The 3rd Sundays will be exclusively spoke nights. Exciting!

Hope you're all having great weeks!
See you Sunday! SIGN UP!

Good Friday

Posted 43 days ago ago by Storytellers

Hello.

So, I know that most of you probably didn't even realize this was happening, but the Good Friday service that was planned at the Cork house tomorrow is being cancelled. I realized that I forgot to mention something to everyone on Sunday, but mostly Ryan and I have come down with a pretty nasty virus this week and don't feel like we can host something at our house. Believe me, you don't want this stuff. Fevers for dayyyys. You are all still welcome to meet up at Minsky's at 7 and share a meal together, but we just can't do the service.

Good Friday is the observance of Christ's journey to the Cross and his ultimate death. You can check this site out for the 7 last words of Jesus. A good way to walk through His last moments. Take a moment to pray and consider this part of the Easter journey. It's crucial to our celebration of His resurrection!

Hope you all have a truly blessed Easter weekend.

Prayers for the Nagels

Posted 46 days ago ago by Storytellers

Hey there, Storytellers,

I hope you're all having a nice Monday. I wanted to alert you to a prayer opportunity for the Nagels. For those of you who weren't with us last night, Matt Nagel - wife to Molly, and father to Harper - was running the Brew to Brew yesterday morning and had a stroke. He was rushed to KU Med where they performed surgery on his brain. After another stroke and another surgery, Matt is resting, but his brain is still very swollen. This family needs our prayers now more than ever.

There will be a prayer service today from 4-5 pm at the KU Med Chapel. If you would like, please come join with Matt's friends and family as we ask the Lord for healing. You can find a map to the chapel here:
http://www.kumed.com/find-us/~/media/Files/pdf/campus_map.ashx

If you aren't able to attend, would you mind saying a quick prayer around 4:00? Additionally, feel free to follow Matt's story on the family's Caring Bridge page:
http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/kcmattnagel

Lord Jesus, you are the God who sees us; you are the God who heals us. We are asking you to come down to Matt's hospital room and relieve the swelling in his brain. We ask that you would preserve his body, his brain function, his mind, his personality - please keep all aspects of who he is free from harm as his brain swells. Please protect Molly and Harper with your grace and provision. We know you are near.

Thanks, everyone, for being awesome.
Peace to you today,
Jensen
