who • when • where • why

WHO: We are a group of people (all ages and life stages) who believe that being missionaries doesn't just mean going across the ocean to tell people about Jesus, but telling our stories right here in our own communities and blessing those around us as God continually blesses us.

WHEN: We meet the 1st & 3rd Sundays of each month at 3:30pm, sharing a meal family-style and sharing our lives with each other and anyone who joins us. These times typically include worship, prayer, laughing, and tomfoolery.

WHERE: Jon & Alissa Shirley's house in Brookside: 5703 Rockhill Rd, KCMO 64110

WHY: We believe our stories are, in fact, the good news of Jesus. We exist to draw people into the deep, beautiful, restoring love of Jesus by figuring out our stories and how to share them with the world.

C'mon Er'body!

Posted 11 days ago ago by Storytellers

Hey Guys!

You're gonna have to get used to my emails coming to you at a different point in the week now! And by that I mean, I'm going to have to get used to sending an email on a different day of the week. Because - did you hear - Storytellers has moved to 1st & 3rd Sundays! And next week FEBRUARY 19 is our next meeting! We'll be at the Shirley house eating tacos! Yeah. Tacos.

The door will be open at the Shirley's at 3:30 p.m. for you to come and hang out. We will eat at 4:30 and start worship and prayer at 6:30. The hope is that we'll be able to spend some really great, productive, and leisurely time worshiping together from 6:30 on. So don't come at 6:30 expecting to sit down and eat - that happens at 4:30! Roger? Check out the sign up sheet RIGHT HERE!

I have secret spies all over the place so even if I'm not there because I'm having a baby I will still know if you guys make the food thing happen! Don't fail me now! ...Too intense? Meh.

Also. Be sure to read over the questions and thoughts Jon sent out about your Missional Address - this is what we're going to be centering our focus on for the next little while.

Again. Here's the sign up sheet.

See you guys on the 19th!

For Storytellers coming to the retreat this weekend....

Posted 20 days ago ago by Storytellers

Storytellers who will be joining us this weekend for the retreat -

We will be having a LOT of discussion about missional address this weekend, SO, if you haven't put any thought into yet, be sure to do that before Saturday.

Here's what I'm asking...

Simply put as much info as you have at this time into the questions below.

I was with Ryan Carr this morning and I asked him if he had thought through it yet. Here's a bit of our convo:

Me: "Ryan, have you thought much about the missional address stuff?"

Ryan: "Dude, I have no idea what my missional address is right now."

Me: "Nobody does man, no worries about that. That's why we are working through the questions for a few months."

SO - we aren't looking for the final answer. We are looking for information that will help us get there.

So - here's the info again. Give as much prayer to it as possible.

"MISSIONAL ADDRESS?":

Begin to ask God where he's sending you - What's the "address" of mission for you?

1. Do you know the "address" of your mission?
  • Do you know exactly (or have an idea of) what/where God is asking you to go? If so, what is it?
    • Articulate the who, what, when, where, why...
  • If not, at this point, do you sense God is sending you on an adventure? Begin to ask who, what, when, where, why about it.
  • Are there visions?
  • Are there prophecies?
  • Is there a passion in you to go serve a certain people, or work to make a wrong thing right?
2. If not, then what is God doing around you? How can you join him there?
Think about where you live, work, socialize, and play
  • Who is in your life? What would be good news to them?
  • Are there people of peace? Jesus told us not to leave people of peace in Luke 10. Could you spend more time there discovering what God is doing?
  • Do you see an obvious need that you are burdened to meet?
  • Is there an obvious project that you can put your hand to?
  • Where can you bring a tangible sense of hope? Where do you recognize a poverty of spirit or a broken heart? Where is there a wound that needs healing?
  • Does anyone in the Storytellers seem to have a call that you also have? Do you care about what they care about? Would you like to work with them?
These questions are just a way to begin. Hang in there. We'll get to some answers.

PEACE!

Gonna be a great weekend.

A Storytellers Prayer Request

Posted 22 days ago ago by Storytellers

Hello again.

Just needed to stop in real quick and ask each of you to take a minute and pray for our dear friends and fellow Storytellers, Dan and Emilee Geldart. Dan's dad, Paul, was diagnosed with lung cancer yesterday. Obviously, a huge blow to the Geldart family. Would you just stop for a second (or even a few minutes) and pray for this family? Pray for the journey that lies ahead of them. I'm so thankful for a God that is prepared to take these journeys with us. The God of all hope and peace! Paul's wife's name is Romona, please keep her in your prayers as well.

And since I'm here, saying these things, would you also keep Ryan Cork's grandmother in your prayers too? We found out today that she's been diagnosed with breast cancer.

The Lord is mighty. He can do all things! And he created us to support each other! What a better way to do so than to pray for one another. I will keep you updated as the needs of the Geldart family become available.

Thanks guys.
Love you all.

GOAL!

Posted 22 days ago ago by Storytellers

Hello!!

Has everyone been thinking about filling up the kiddie pool because it's uncannily warm outside? (uncannily is a word. i just looked it up). I feel pretty confident that soon giant waves will crest the horizon carrying polar bears on the tiny bits of ice that are left to cling to. I mean. Don't get me wrong. I love the warmth. But it just seems weird to be wearing flip flops in January and it can only mean dire consequences for the ol' polar bears up north. Right?

Anywayyyy. This coming week is our first week on the new rhythm! I know Jon already sent out an email, but I just wanted to make sure you weren't planning on meeting on Thursday cause we're switchin' to Sundays! And THIS SUNDAY is SUPERBOWL SUNDAY. So we would really love to encourage you to get together with your friends - a great time to connect with people of peace - and watch grown men play an adolescent's sport as a career! If you don't have plans and can't think of a darn thing to do on Sunday then you're welcome at Jon and Alissa's house at 3:30 to watch the game. Don't forget to bring a snack to share!

Our next meeting will be February 19 at the Shirley's. Stay tuned for those details next week.

If you have any questions, just shoot me an email! Hope you all have a great week! Go Sports Team!

Storytellers: the 61 Retreat, New Rhythms, and "Missional Address"

Posted 25 days ago ago by Storytellers

Storytellers, here's some good ol' information ya!

For starters, you are invited to...

the 61 Retreat: a learning community
Next Weekend, Feb. 3-4 @ Cedar Ridge

A learning community retreat happens every six months and is a place where MC planning teams work on the next 1/2 of the year.

The Storyteller planning team (Jon and Alissa Shirley, Ryan and Claire Cork, Jordan Chesley, and Ryan Carr) would like to extend the invitation to you, along with the GN staff, to join us to learn more about being on MC teams.

Sign up at the info table at the Celebration Service THIS WEEKEND: details will be sent to you after you sign up.

New Rhythms for the GN and the Storytellers
As you know. Starting in February the GN Celebration Service Rhythm is changing.

Here is what the GN's new Celebration Service rhythm means for the Storytellers:

Our MC is moving to Sundays:
  • 1ST SUNDAY: Gather at the Shirley's as a spiritual family grounded in play, community, worship, and prayer
  • 2ND SUNDAY: Celebration Service at Cedar Ridge
  • 3RD SUNDAY: Gather at the Shirley's to each discover our "missional address". (Multiplying for 3rd Sundays - starting in April)
  • 4TH SUNDAY: Celebration Service
  • When there is a 5TH SUNDAY: All Worship and Prayer at Cedar Ridge
THIS SUNDAY, however, IS SUPER BOWL SUNDAY
It's the mother of all OUT opportunities!
Go out and get with friends - Enjoy the time.

The Shirley's are having some friends over if you would like to join them there. Feel free to begin dropping by at 3:30 for the pre-game.
If you come - bring your favorite football game snacks.

"MISSIONAL ADDRESS?": TRY TO BEGIN THINKING THROUGH THIS BEFORE THE RETREAT
Here are some questions to work through as we begin to ask Jesus about our "missional address":
No need to get frustrated about it - we have time. Some of you may know right where you want to go, other's won't yet. Not a problem.

Begin to ask God where he's sending you - What's the "address" of mission for you?

1. Do you know the "address" of your mission?
  • Do you know exactly (or have an idea of) what/where God is asking you to go? If so, what is it?
    • Articulate the who, what, when, where, why...
  • Do you sense God is sending you on an adventure?

Sure love you guys!

See you Sunday for our 5th Sunday all worship and prayer service - Cedar Ridge, 5pm.

Howdy Doody Judys!

Posted 40 days ago ago by Storytellers

Being a native Idahoan I find that there are a few words in my vocabulary that, perhaps, don't make a frequent appearance in other's. Howdy is one of those words. I'm not even really joking when I say it. I mean it as an actual salutation.

Happy New Year! It's 2012! We're so excited about what the year holds for us as The Gathering Network and as Storytellers. I'm certain that God has really beautiful stories to grow in each of us. Thank you for your faithfulness to pray as we moved to our new location last week! It was a great time. Continue to pray for that transition.

And now for the facts of the matter. Our next meeting is next Thursday January 19, 6:30p.m. at the Cork house! Yay! We'll be gathering together and eating Pancakes! Doesn't that sound fun? Other things might be served, but generally the focus is on the pancakes. So GO HERE and sign up! Should be a great time.

Here's where we'll be:
632 E. Porte Cimi Pas St.
Kansas City, MO 64131

Hope you can come!

Tomorrow Night: Prayer at the Shirleys

Posted 51 days ago ago by Storytellers

     Storytellers,

Just a reminder that we are meeting TOMORROW night, instead of our regularly scheduled Thursday night to pray in regards to the Gathering Networks move to Cedar Ridge this Sunday, January 8th.

Where: Shirley house
When: 7-9 -
NO MEAL

As we pray, I would love to center around Isaiah 61 together.

I'd like to go about it this way:
Firstly, I like to spend the first hour together, simply adoring Jesus for who he says he is in this passage.

As we do, I would love to think about the ways he is anointed to set us free out of the places of captivity we are in today, or how He gives  a "spirit of praise instead of a spirit of despair." Rather, than ask him to do those things in our lives - I want to celebrate the character the one who already has done those things in our lives. In short, I want us to announce the character of God to him, and to each other as we pray. We'll talk more about that tomorrow night.

Then, for the second hour of the night - let's ask God to use the GN to incarnate his character found in this passage. Let's ask that for the Storytellers as well.

Here's the passage. Spend some time. Come ready and prepared.

Isaiah 61: 1-4
The Spirit of the sovereign God is upon me:

He has anointed me to:
Bring good news to the poor.

He has sent me to:
Bind up the brokenhearted
Proclaim that captives will be released
Prisoners will be freed.

He has sent me to announce to those that mourn:
That the year of God's favor has come
With it the day of his anger against their enemies.

To those who grieve in Zion:
He will give a crown of beauty instead of ashes
joyous blessing instead of mourning
Festive praise instead of a spirit of despair

So that they may be called "oaks of righteousness" a planting of the Lord, for the display of his splendor.

Till then,

Jon

Good Tidings!

Posted 57 days ago ago by Storytellers

Hello Everyone!

Hope everyone had a truly wonderful Christmas! Seems like it came and went in a flash.

Just wanted to stop in and give you the details of our next meeting. We will be meeting in one week - TUESDAY January 3rd from 7-9 p.m. at the Shirley House. Note the different day and time of this meeting. There will not be a meal at this meeting. We will be coming together to pray for The Gathering's transition to our new location at Cedar Ridge Community Church. This is such a great opportunity to be a part of something that will truly form the foundation of a new chapter in The Gathering's story. PLEASE make it a priority to be there. Just don't come with a rumblin' tummy cause, like I said, we're not feedin' ya.

If you have any questions, just let me know! Have a splendid New Year. Splendid and safe. See you next week!

Here's the address for Tuesday:
